28 July 2007Do the walk of lifeBatesLine suggested Walk Score, a Google Maps-based application that rates your neck of the woods on a 1 to 100 scale based upon what's nearby and hence theoretically within walking distance. Here at Surlywood, we rate a 78, which seemed a trifle high to me I had guesstimated somewhere in the upper 50s so I punched in what was once my parents' house (my stepmother lives there now) to see if its more-suburban character would cost it points. It scored a 43. With a little fiddling, I was able to locate an address with a 98 score*, though not anywhere near here. And don't do too much playing with it: they have a connection limit to Google Maps which they're not allowed to exceed. The creators explain their thinking here. * 666 Fifth Avenue, New York, NY 10103. Posted at 10:20 AM to Almost YogurtLikely because of your closeness to Mayfair. My score is 51. And interestingly it reports things up to 3 miles away as "walking distance" That little cluster of small businesses along 50th east of May counted for rather more than I expected. The three-mile range is often used as a rule-of-thumb to help determine whether to take the bike (three or under), or car. 71. Close-in suburbs with bookie joints, bordellos, and dollar stores at easy access. Posted by: John Salmon at 2:59 PM on 28 July 2007My current location rates as 63 out of 100, which is not bad, though the grocery stores being on the other side of I-4 puts them out of walking range for me (I'm not crossing those highway exits and entrances -- you have now experienced the way people in Central Florida drive for yourself...) On the other hand, despite the Publix being only a block away from my old location that address only got a 37 out of 100. Posted by: Mister Snitch! at 10:26 PM on 28 July 2007I would have expected your neighborhood to get a relatively good score, Charles. One of the things I like about the Mayfair center is that it was built when they still connected shopping centers to the adjacent neighborhood. Our score was in the 40s, but Google doesn't seem to know about the new Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market and pharmacy two blocks from the house. Most of the anomalies have to do with the limitations of the source data and the inability of Google Maps to calculate walking distance. It's an automated way of trying to answer the question, "How comfortable would you be walking from your house to the grocery, dry cleaners, school, etc.?" Posted by: Michael Bates at 11:33 PM on 28 July 2007Hmm, mine was a 49, and I expected it to be MUCH higher - we can walk to just about anything here. Brian doesn't really even use his truck anymore unless he goes to see his mom. hln Posted by: hln at 9:07 PM on 29 July 2007Got an 88 here in Hoboken (10th & Garden). Did McGehee REALLY get a "3"?
