Damned lies and statistics

All over blogdom, Tam's seen 'em:

I can't tell you how many times I've seen a blog that is a Large Mammal! in the Ecosystem, with a Technorati score of One Hojillion! and then I open its SiteMeter and it's getting 100 hits a day, all from random Google searches. It turns out that they're on every reciprocal blogroll known to mankind. Feh. That doesn't get you the eyeballs; good writing gets you the eyeballs.

Wait a minute. There are reciprocal blogrolls?

I dunno if I'm getting eyeballs, but some body parts seem to be showing up here and on the meter.

It is funny how this whole thing works isn't it? I really try not to get drawn into the popularity contest aspects of blogging. Although, I couldn't resist the sitemeter thingy, and at one point I thought someone was stalking my blog--numerous visits and pages viewed on a near daily basis, eventually I deduced it was me. I was stalking myself! LOL! It really cracked me up. Pretty sad in a way.

You can set SM to ignore your own visits, in case you'd like to stalk yourself unseen. :)

Does the fact that I have no idea what a "reciprocal blogroll" is make me a loser of a blogger?

blogoSFERICS/Yippee-Ki-Yay! (this was before I separated out the old bS posts from the less old YKY posts)) had just begun to evolve into a Hairy Primate when I decided I wanted a new URL, and everything went swirling down the drain.

I think The McGehee Zone is now an insect, which is really about where I would have been anyway had not Glenn Reynolds blogrolled me in 2002, and the Bear Flag League taken off on its Gray Davis recall-buoyed flight in 2003.

Well, to be honest, I surf with my islets of Langerhans...

"good writing gets you the eyeballs."

Yeah? Then explain this.

That, Mister Snitch, is all the result of a misunderstanding.

The real mystery is why that Truth Laid Bear site is still considered some sort of accurate measure. There's no analytics at all behind it -- almost completely handmade. I think a site doesn't even show up in the rankings unless it's submitted. Why is anyone still paying attention to it?

Some people set great store by it; I thank NZB for his work, but I don't obsess over my standing (which I tend to obscure in my linkage anyway).
