We put the "Box" in Home Box Office

No, you can't have HBO on analog cable. Not yours:

Tonight, [Cox Cable] began running a crawl saying that now it is Sept. 30 when they will exile HBO exclusively to their overpriced digital gated community. They even repeated their threats again about "avoiding" this by getting digital cable, though they managed to misspell avoid as "advoid" in the crawl. The situation remains the same for me and my family: I don't like cable boxes, our living room TV setup isn't convenient for a box and, most importantly, we like to have HBO in other rooms in the house (such as my bedroom), but of course that would require more boxes (and more costs).

So, Cox will be losing $16 a month from me starting next month. Here's hoping I'm not the only one who shows them what a money-losing proposition their decision is.

Well, don't count on me: I wasn't giving them the $16 to begin with, and this won't make it any more likely that I will.

I gave in last year and got digital cable. I wanted a DVR anyway so there really isn't any more hardware present as it just took the place of the old trusty VCR. True that if you want the bedroom TV to have it as well you have to get another digital box. With no box you merely have analog cable there and now no HBO on Ch. 2 as you did before. HBO was also one of the only pay channels that would come in without a converter.

Come February 2009 it will all be on the Box. Analog cable dies with analog TV. Cox is trying to bury it 16 months early.

Huh. Surprised to see you guys still dealing with this. Around here, they finally just went all digital, and the analog boxes simply stopped working. Period. I figured all cable companies everywhere did it that way.

They had been sending out both analog and digital signals for a few years, mind you, and tried to encourage everyone to switch. New users just got digital, and anyone with a broken box got changed over as well. But one day they flipped a switch and it was over.
