The Finch Formerly Known As Gold

But I was so much older then

Helen Mirren's younger than that now, according to this item from InStyle's back pages (12/07):

[W]e hail Mirren's ubiquity because it served a more triumphant purpose — a constant reminder that women can be not only gifted, witty and charming after ... say, age 52, but also ridiculously sexy.

No quarrel with any of these, though I feel compelled to point out that Dame Helen was born in 1945.

She'll always be Morgana in Excalibur to me. Woo Hoo!

No one ever accused magazine staff of having the capability to perform basic math.

Well, they didn't say she IS 52, they said "after" age 52. You agree she's after 52, right?

No question about that. They could have said 42 or 32, for that matter, and have been equally correct. But they diminished their own point, I think, by this bit of coy evasion.

Besides, it's not like no one's ever seen a Major Babe over 50 before. (Meryl Yourish just turned 50 and I'll be damned if she looks a day over 37.)

I've no choice but believe you: there is no photos of M.Yourish @ the link.

They don't diminish their own point, they are just being polite to the subject of their article. You know, it is considered polite not to be too specific about a lady's age after a certain mark is reached. For lucky some it's 52, for others - much younger. The episode of that awful "Nanny" comes to mind, where Fran counts her birthdays: "25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 29, 29, 29, 29..."

But they need not have given any number at all to make their point: I think it's safe to assume that readers of InStyle are aware that Helen Mirren is older than Hannah Montana.

(Meryl's in the middle.)

Thanks for pointing it, or how would I've figured it out? You know, 2 men, one woman - which one is Meryl there?
Actually, she looks her age on that photo (for an American), so what's a big deal?

I'm not so sure about the readers. I, for one, have no idea who Hannah Montana is, but can picture Helen Mirren. But I'm an odd egg, I admit.
