Beat the system

And if it's an operating system, the one to beat seems to be Windows XP, used by 70 percent of visitors to this site, if you believe SiteMeter. I usually prefer Analog's stats, but the current version predates Vista, and I wanted to see if anyone was actually using Vista to get here.

And yes, some folks are: 6 percent. This is second among Windows variants, which go all the way back to W95 (0.2 percent). About ten percent use Macs, and the vast majority of them have OS X; various Unices come to a shade under 4 percent.

Microsoft's Internet Explorer is the browser used by 58 percent of visitors, IE 7 slightly more often than 6. Thirty-one percent use Firefox; various other Mozilla flavors add three percent more. Safari has just under six percent; Opera and Konqueror divide up most of what's left. I am somewhat shaken to see IE 5 and Netscape 4 users still showing up, years after I gave up trying to code for them; there's even a couple of holdouts identified as IE 4 somewhere, which I think are mobiles on Windows CE.

I was using IE6 because I abhor IE7 but I have only recently gone to using Safari 3.04 and I really like it :) Sites look like they do with IE7 except there isn't the IE bull. Have you ever used it?

I've played with Safari on a Mac; I've never used a Windows version. What I saw, though, I liked.

When my wife was in danger of having to replace her computer, we were agreed that we would not get one with Vista on it. Fortunately, Microsoft's contract with big chains to sell only Vista, doesn't apply to little one-store outfits like the place we use when we need repairs.

Even more fortunately, the problem with Chris' computer turned out to be bad memory sticks, easily fixed.

An interesting snapshot. I guess I flit between browsing with Flock on OS X and Firefox on Ubuntu (for when my partner is using our Mac). No doubt the Vista ratio will rise as XP slowly retires and people eventually replace their computers (unless of course they actually start using something else entirely).

Well, you've got at least one Ubuntu user. Don't know if it shows in your traffic stats, though, as I tend to read your posts from the safe distance of Google Reader.

Since you mentioned this, Chaz, I have a comment. I mostly read your stuff via Google Reader, and the method you're using to mark indents doesn't translate there. Makes it more challenging for me to filter your pithy interlineations from whatever you've copied from the blogosphere. Of course, I still stop by from time to time, either to read the Vent or to comment.

Does anyone's blog show up with blockquotes delineated in Google Reader? I've read both the raw RSS 2.0 and Atom feeds here, and both of them have the <DIV> tags intact, but if I'm understanding XML correctly (and I may not be), it's insensitive to that sort of thing by design.

I'm one of the Vista visitors. My opinion of it so far: Meh.

For whatever it's worth, the blogs I get in Reader that visibly delineate blockquotes all use the blockquote tag inside a div tag. See, e.g., Wil Wheaton's blog. When I look at the feed elements from your site, I don't see the blockquote tag used.

I pulled up Wil, and discovered one difference: he's shipping his feed through Feedburner, which apparently performs a reformat of the XML code. Meanwhile, you're getting my feed straight from the source.

Further exploration appears warranted.

FWIW, the Gazette's stats are showing 74% XP, only 4% Vista, and 8% OS X (I didn't see a breakdown for non-OS X).

Another FWIW: I've heard that IE 8 will be one of the few browsers (along with the latest build of Safari) that can pass the ACID2 test.

I just got a new Dell and, of course, it came with Vista. I'm getting used to it and so far so good. What I don't like is all the Dell crapola they stick you with and assorted other Dell nonsense like their alleged customer service. I like my computer so far but, to be honest, I won't buy another Dell.

One smart thing I did when I changed computers is that I didn't use the AT&T DSL disc which kept their proprietary crap off this one. All I want is a connection -- not all that Yahoo crap.
