22 February 2008Second-generation jackalope retainerMegan Wallent and family have been vacationing in France, and in their hotel bathroom they found this, um, piece of equipment:
I have no idea what this contraption might be. She says that it looks like the vertical arm should pivot downward through an arc of however many degrees, but it doesn't actually move. As close as I ever came to a French rest room was a tuvalet in Istanbul's (not Constantinople's) Atatürk International Airport, then known as Yeşilköy Airport, which had signage in Turkish and French, and my French at the time was less pathetic than my Turkish; apart from the fact that I remember nothing about it, I can't really offer any suggestions. One commenter at Megan's site reckoned that it might be a support for wheelchair users to facilitate movement off and on the pot, as it were; this seems at least plausible, anyway. Not that I have ever been to one. But if I ever did, I would expect to find that!! Posted by: Minessa at 6:12 PM on 22 February 2008Coathanger? Posted by: CGHill at 7:16 PM on 22 February 2008That was my first thought, too - about the wheelchair "parking" device. Not at all sure, though. Posted by: Tatyana at 1:14 AM on 23 February 2008I could be mistaken, but I believe that is one of the new combination coconut drill and pistachio cracker. I've heard they are all the rage in France and Singapore. Since the leverage activation bar does not move, this particular unit was obviously malfunctioning. Probably just locked up and needed to be rebooted. Posted by: Winston at 6:29 AM on 23 February 2008That bondage thing might get some legs ... so to speak.
