Recoiling in horror

Spring may indeed be sprung, but I much prefer the traditional signs (birds, crocuses, whatever) to what I actually got this morning, which was the infamous Service Engine Soon light.

Weirdly, my gas mileage has been up lately, so I'm guessing this has something to do with fuel delivery. Unfortunately, I won't know until I can get the code(s) pulled.

My light just started popping up as well. It never comes on when I start the car, and it doesn't always come on at all. It usually comes on while I am turning. Since it still drives the same, I haven't exactly rushed to get it checked out.

Double-check your gas cap -- an improperly closed gas cap is the most common cause of the dreaded light lighting. Of course, on most models, you still need to get the d**m thing reset!

Since it's been a week since last fillup, I think the gas cap is probably seated correctly.

My current thinking: either one of the front oxygen sensors (the rears have been replaced within the last 18,000 miles), or the fuel-pressure regulator.

I've been severely tempted to snag a used Nissan CONSULT-II unit on eBay; I have to figure that Nissan won't give me any tech support on it, but it might be easier than just pulling codes and looking them up in the manual. Then again, it's a lot pricier than a scan tool.

I'm very happy with a simple OBD reader - great investment.
