7 May 2008How you know the weather is badTip #3409: You're on the drive home and you can't hear the tornado sirens going off because the wind is too loud. Seriously. On 39th west of Classen I saw a city trash bin, once full of yard waste, upended. And the operative word here is "on": the bin dropped across one lane of traffic, forcing motorists to detour around it, provided of course that they even saw it, black shapes being fairly indistinguishable when the skies have next to no light to give. As severe thunderstorms go, this one was pretty routine except that I was actually out in it, which made it look a whole lot worse. Update: Damage reports are coming in, and apparently the worst of it hit just a couple miles west of me. Posted at 5:55 PM to Weather or NotGlad to see that you are OK- inside and safe. T minus 45 mins. for our blast, here in Yanush. Posted by: localmalcontent at 6:22 PM on 7 May 2008Nope. If I ever get sick of having a back yard, I may drop one back there, though that ignores the question of how I get to it without being blown to Kingdom Come. On t'other hand, this little house is pretty solidly built, the way they all used to be. (Really crappy construction didn't come into vogue until the late 1960s and early 1970s.) Posted by: CGHill at 7:00 PM on 7 May 2008My daughter called me while she, too, was out in it. I told her that she needed her arse kicked for being out driving in the middle of all of that. Seems that you also need the same treatment. LOL Posted by: Deb at 5:04 AM on 8 May 2008I didn't have a lot of choice in the matter: when I left the shop there was only mist. Four miles later came the cloudburst, and I had seven miles yet to go. I did actually pull over and stop for about ten minutes; in retrospect, I think those were probably the wrong ten minutes.
