The Castaways

Soma 1433, 1965
Billboard: #12

You can't get much more accusative than this: "Liar, liar, pants on fire, your nose is longer than a telephone wire." The Castaways might be the only Minnesota rock band to land in the South Dakota Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, but they're known nationwide for this under-two-minute blast of fury tinged with regret, which was all over the radio in the summer of '65, Jim Donna's organ fighting for space with Bob Folschow's falsetto vocal and that mighty scream in the middle. The song, with the band lip-synching, even showed up in the movie It's a Bikini World. Amos Heilicher's Soma label in Minneapolis had signed the Castaways for only one record; the label subsequently rushed out "Goodbye Babe," which as Soma 1442 bubbled up to #101 that fall, but that would be it for the band's recording career, though Fontana issued a couple of Castaways singles, notably "Walking in Different Circles," a cover of a Goldie and the Gingerbreads number written by Scott English. Bassist Roy Hensley, who wrote "Goodbye Babe," died in 2005; the Castaways continue as a local touring band, led by Jim Donna.

Where can I get this on CD?
In 1999, Plum Records issued a fairly-complete Castaways CD, which is currently out of print and horribly expensive; you can download the single at iTunes, or you can get a lower-bit-rate version from the Castaways Web site.
