Sucky sounds

VH1's list of the 50 Most Awesomely Bad Songs Ever has a few problems. For one thing, "ever" really should refer to a longer period than thirty years; I can rattle off all manner of wretched crap from the first half of the Seventies, and there are even, yes, it is true, heinous Fifties and Sixties songs. Besides, I sort of like "Sunglasses at Night."

On the other hand, I think it's a fairly safe bet that anything containing the word "pimp," or that is credited to A "featuring" B, is going to be complete and utter crap, and when they redo this list in five years, about the maximum extent of VH1's attention span, I expect to see many such recordings ("tunes" seems to be overly generous) so proclaimed.

Any Awesomely Bad Song Ever list that doesn't include Dusty Springfield's "You Don't Have to Say You Love Me," or freaking "Afternoon Delight" is a farce.

But, Achy Breaky and "We Built This City" aren't bad choices, ya gotta admit.

Good Lord . . I guess it really is true that if it's popular you aren't supposed to like it! :(

LOL. Well of course. After all, the masses, the public, the people whose CD- and concert-ticket-buying money makes the industry possible, and ensures that people who devote their lives to music aren't all living in a rusted-out van down by the river ... are all morons! All they want is meaningless dreck! Why, if they had any taste it would be "Elvis who?" and we'd all be worshipping Yoko Ono.

It's surprising how many people who have devoted their lives to music seem to wish they'd gone into literature instead. They want to be able to make money by somehow outdoing War and Peace with a three-minute song.

But enough about Elvis Costello.

Hall and Oates was robbed! "Watch out boy, she'll chew you up"! Some of those were actually good songs that just got overplayed, like the mmmmm one.

There are some H&O songs I dearly love, but they are seldom the ones played on Maggot 104.1.
