Say goodbye to my little friend

My IBM Model M keyboard is old enough to drink, but I’m pretty sure it wasn’t liquid that killed it.

Actually, I haven’t pitched it out yet: there are a few more drastic cleaning methods I want to try. But damn, I was hoping for at least 22 years out of this keyboard, and my spare El Cheapo unit lives up to its name.

Crazy idea: I haven’t tried this but someone once told me that you can clean you keyboard in the dishwasher. Just allow it a long time (days) to dry out and it should work fine. Like I said, this is just what someone told me. I have never tried it.

I’ve heard about that. Then again, I don’t have a dishwasher.

I heard about the dishwasher thing, too, but always figured it was an urban legend.

I once had to take my grad-school lab computer keyboard home and vacuum it out (the desk it was on was the one place in the lab I was allowed (by OSHA) to eat lunch). The . key had been sticking and giving me ellipses when I didn’t want them.

When I brought it back and plugged it back in, my officemate Greg saw me typing, and said, “Oh, are you not having trouble with your periods any longer?” Half a second later, he turned beet red and stammered out, “That came out REALLY wrong.”
