As the balcony closes

Why, yes, I have kept this for twenty years:

A friend of mine likes to say, “When I have lots of free time, I feel wealthy.”

Roger Ebert, in an email to yours truly, 17 October 1993. (Before you ask: we were on CompuServe.) And I’d bet anything Gene Siskel is waiting with tickets to a premiere.

Addendum: A favorite Ebert story, from 2005.

I had a similar thought — but do they do cinema in the hereafter, or would the Balcony Boys have to review live theater? Maybe something with Olivier or one or both Hepburns…

I would hope that whatever a person desired most (well, within the bounds of what is “correct”), that would be possible. I admit I’m kind of hoping, after I get the, “Okay, here’s everything you wanted to know but didn’t understand on that side” explanation, to be shown a large well-lighted studio full of wool and quilting fabric.

And I love that quotation about free time; it is very true.
