Your piece of the pie

As of yesterday, there were 46,250 comments on the site — that is, comments within the current WordPress database, which goes back to the first week of September 2006. (There were about 17,000 more in the first Movable Type database, from August 2002 to that point, all converted to static files.)

Now this figure seems amazing to some, and by “some” I mean “people who hang out in Twitter chats to bewail their lack of response.” Forty-six thousand sounds like a lot of comments, but that’s a slow month over at Ace’s.

Still, I’m happy with the participation level here. And inasmuch as I have a gizmo that counts these for me, I’m tossing this question to you guys: how many of those 46,000 do you think you wrote? Be sure to show your work.

Not all that many. Much as I bewail the lack of comments on my blog, I’m afraid I don’t comment much on others. Still, I can’t help having my “Why doesn’t anybody like me?” moments.

Probably too many, at least too many lacking any useful substance.

Lessee: I discovered your blog through the Loss Leaders, and that was about 4.5 years ago. I comment approximately every three to five days. So some number between 318 and 547.

    More than I should have.

…for the same reasons as fillyjonk gives — but she is being falsely modest and I’m not.

Roger underestimates his contributions: 865 of them. And Lynn has a respectable 349. (Backwoods Conservative, who guessed 42, in fact has 297.)

This is my 8,546th comment, which means I’ve done just under eighteen and a half percent of the comments here. The hardest to count, so far, has been McGehee, because he’s had a few different email addresses. I’ve turned up 3,327 so far, third on the user list, which is exactly where I guessed he’d be. And in between McGehee and me — Fillyjonk, with 4,573.

42 is my standard answer. It’s a number I picked up while hitchhiking around the galaxy.

Wow, but did you notice that 318+547=865? Now THAT is math prowess!

Roger is tuned into the universe in ways we dare not imagine. :)

Maybe 50 or so. Plus ten or so from before I became Trumwill.

    Will: Fifty-six by my count.

And from the other end of the scale, how about six? I come here nearly every day, enjoy both the postings and comments, and then get the nagging feeling I should be adding something as well. The assumption my addition should be substantial keeps my fingers off the keyboard. Usually.
