A heroine for our times

Ella Marija Lani Yelich-O’Connor, better known as Lorde, is nineteen today, but for the two years I’ve been aware of her existence I seem to have picked up a strange cross-generational vibe from her, as though she’d inherited DNA from both Lana Del Rey and Wednesday Addams: you can hear the torch in her voice, even in her most electro-dreamy tunes, yet she remains altogether ooky.

And despite her best efforts, she’s highly photogenic:

That said, my favorite song of hers, “Tennis Court,” from the Pure Heroine album, yielded up a spectacularly cringe-inducing video:
