More to the point. The Golden Dragon Chinese Buffet and other stuff in the 1st Nat’l Bank Bldg on Robinson will have to close it’s doors this Friday along with everyone else in the building as it’s shutting down for ‘remodeling’ Ken’s told me that if he can find a place he can afford he will open again, but if not, not. It’s time for the Dustbury Army to show some love. Dude’s been there over 29 years and recently received a letter of appreciation from da Guv acknowledging their time. Told him if da Guv offered me one of those letters, I’d tell her to stick it. “Congrats for being here a long time, now shove off, mate.” No, that’s not what da Guv said, but it sure feels like it.

I mentioned the dude’s been there. Yes he has. His wife has been on the grill the whole time. So props to Ken’s wife, whose name I still don’t know. She just smiles at me and puts the bagel on the grill when I walk in. But soon, no more.

This remodeling at First National is way overdue, but yes, it sucks that the few, the proud, the remaining, are being squeezed out.

Walked into the bldg one day and heard piano music coming from the second floor. So I walked upstairs and into the actual former 1st Nat’l Bank. Totally empty except for a player grand piano putting out mood music on autopilot. Fine example of ’30’s Art Deco interior stonework, just a might creepy.

And is it me or do the goverment buildings in downtown OKC give off a 1930’s FDR WPA Federal Penitentiary vibe?

It’s not just you. City Hall, the Music Hall, the County Courthouse and the old police HQ all derive from Public Works Administration grants in the 1930s.
