An idea whose time will never come

TTAC’s Matt Posky:

Throughout the 20th century, there have been three social ideologies that looked appetizing on paper, but ultimately proved toxic in practice. I am of course talking about fascism, communism, and the homeowners association. While we’ve successfully managed to keep the former two restrained in North America, the dreaded homeowners association has persisted — borrowing heavily from the worst parts of both fascism and communism to enforce an arbitrary pettiness upon regular folks everywhere.

A recent example:

The Auburn Greens homeowners association has instituted a new mandate for its residents: Keep your garage doors rolled up from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday or face a $200 fine.

The standard response to this is “Don’t buy in a neighborhood with an HOA.” Meanwhile, burglars are taking notes.

Shouldn’t that say “Fascism, communism, and the Homeowner’s Association – but I repeat myself”?

I live in fear, still, that somehow my neighborhood will be designated Historic (they tried once before) and I don’t think I have the patience for that kind of nonsense.

Auburn, California — once served by a local newspaper (maybe still) whose editor at one time was a former sports editor for the student paper at Sac State.

Said sports editor had written an op-ed in the student newspaper claiming total unilateral disarmament (not just nuclear) was what America owed the world, and anything less was cowardice.

This was back when Yuri Andropov (one of Putin’s predecessors as head of the KGB) was head of the Soviet Union.

    Coincidence? Probably, but still…

Next step: Keep your doors unlocked between midnight and 6AM, to keep burglars from breaking their nails when entering.

Mike: I expect the UK is considering that even now.

McG: The Auburn Journal is still there.

It’s especially funny to see all the officials run for cover when the press came around. Of course, the TV crew protected them by not naming them.

    Bad optics have amazing power.

Doesn’t look like the former college sports editor is still there though.

This is SO illogical that my brain failed to grasp it, on the first reading. I assumed they wanted all garage doors CLOSED during the day, as a safety measure. Surreal.

HAs are forever telling people not to dry clothes outside. It’s color-coordinated brain-numbing rubbish
