A different experience

Says the Wikipedia scribe: “In mid-1958, at age 15, Hendrix acquired his first acoustic guitar, for $5.”

Did you ever ponder what Jimi Hendrix would have sounded like, as the young folks say, unplugged? Apparently there exists about seven minutes of footage of Hendrix doing Hendrix on an acoustic guitar, and, well, it’s Hendrix, and that’s about all you need to know. Quality is, all things considered, not bad at all.

There’s a properly electrified version of “Hear My Train a-Comin'” on the new Both Sides of the Sky compilation, but, simple 12-bar blues that it is, it works just as well without an amp in sight.

Had he learned the xylophone, the accordion, or bagpipes, he would have been a virtuoso just the same. Well, not the same same, but you know what I mean.

I heard the new Hendrix on NPR website before its release. It’s fun. Perhaps my favorite track is Woodstock with Jimi on bass. Maybe i’ll get it with the Amazon card I got for my birthday.

There’s a fine version of “Hear My Train a-Coming” on Valleys of Neptune, along with an extended instrumental “Sunshine of Your Love” that is, alas, rather ragged, since Hendrix comes rocketing out of the gate and is forced to noticeably slow the tempo because his bandmates can’t quite keep the pace.

Mere musicians were never meant to keep up with Jimi.
