Rafael de Leon, known worldwide as Roaring Lion, put out this vaguely sexist ditty in 1934:
The attribution by the record label to “Hubert Raphael Charles” is, shall we say, not entirely accurate.
Lion was born way back in 1908. In 1942, James Louis McCleese was born in North Carolina; in 1963 as “Jimmy Soul,” he recorded a version of the story first told by the Lion back in the Thirties:
Soul, who fell into a bad drug habit in the 1980s, died in 1988. The Lion was still alive, and held out until 1999.
