The big news at the Sports Animal is that their Edmond FM facility (WWLS-FM) is moving off 97.9 to 98.1, with a claimed fivefold increase in power. (Actually, it’s going up from 6 kw to 31 kw, which is close enough, especially since they’ll be allowed greater antenna height.) Interestingly, the new facility will be licensed, not to Edmond, but to the Village. The likelihood that there will be Village-specific programming on a regular basis is, of course, pretty close to nil.
There used to be a Stillwater station (KVRO) at 98.1; apparently they’ve moved to 101.1.
Ancient history: Before there was a 97.9, there was KWHP, 97.7, a 3000-watt squeaker run by Bill Payne from a house in Edmond. The Payne Radio Group still exists today, with stations in eastern Oklahoma.
